Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (January 7, 1966 – July 16, 1999), née Carolyn Jeanne Bessette, was the wife of John F. Kennedy, Jr., the son of assassinated United States President John F. Kennedy. Her husband, her sister Lauren Bessette, and she died when the private plane he was piloting crashed in the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Their ashes were buried at sea on July 22, 1999.

Bessette-Kennedy was born in White Plains, Westchester Co., New York, the daughter of William J. Bessette and his then-wife, née Ann Messina. Bessette grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut and graduated from Boston University in 1988. She was voted an "All-Around Beautiful Person" while at school. An occasional model, she eventually became a publicist for fashion designer Calvin Klein in New York City, where she met Kennedy. She and Kennedy married on September 21, 1996 on Cumberland Island, Georgia.

As soon as she and her then future husband began dating, she became the subject of several gossip newspapers; she would be in tabloid headlines for the rest of her life. Former Baywatch star and Calvin Klein underwear model Michael Bergin claims that Carolyn Bessette had an affair with him and became pregnant and had an abortion because of their affair prior to her marriage. Their affair was to run its course during her marriage to John, causing tension between John and Carolyn. There were rumors that Carolyn broke up with Michael to marry John, but still loved Michael, even after she married John, and that she was pregnant by John at the time of the plane crash. Other rumors, particular regarding her alleged drug use, were the subject of gossip. Carolyn had one of several arguments with John hours before the fatal crash was to occur. She decided at first not to go on the fatal trip, causing the flight plan to be delayed until after sunset. Finally, she changed her mind and showed up late to John's dismay. They left severals hours later than planned. This is said to have contributed to the fatal plane that night.
