Dawson, real name Roxann Maria Caballero (also known as Roxann Biggs and Roxann Biggs-Dawson) was born in Los Angeles, California. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley earning a B.A. in Dramatic Art in 1980, Dawson's first professional acting job was in a Broadway production of A Chorus Line. She continued a stage career through the 1980s and 1990s, while occasionally landing minor film and television roles. In 1995, she was cast as the half-Klingon engineer B'Elanna Torres on Voyager. The character of B'Elanna Torres was much younger in age than Roxann Dawson. When Voyager started, (If B'Elanna's birthdate of 2349 is to be believed) Torres was 22 years old, when in fact Roxann was really in her thirties. This is not the first time in Star Trek an actress has been hired to play a character younger than they were. Kira Nerys, played by actress Nana Visitor was 26 when Deep Space Nine started, however Nana was really in her mid thirties at the time.

While working on Voyager, Dawson made her directorial debut with the episode "Riddles” (aired 09/1999). Dawson also directed another episode of Voyager and continued on to direct several episodes of Enterprise.
