Radio is the wireless transmission of signals, by modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below those of light.

Radio waves

Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation, created whenever a charged object (in normal radio transmission, an electron) accelerates with a frequency that lies in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. In radio, this acceleration is caused by an alternating current in an antenna. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a few tens of hertz to a few hundred gigahertz.

Electromagnetic radio spectrum
Other types of electromagnetic radiation, with frequencies above the RF range, are infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Since the energy of an individual photon of radio frequency is too low to remove an electron from an atom, radio waves are classified as non-ionizing radiation.

Electromagnetic radiation travels (propagates) by means of oscillating electromagnetic fields that pass through the air and the vacuum of space equally well, and does not require a medium of transport (such as the aether). When radio waves pass an electrical conductor, the oscillating electric or magnetic field (depending on the shape of the conductor) induces an alternating current and voltage in the conductor. This can be transformed into audio or other signals that carry information. The word 'radio' is used to describe this phenomenon, and television, radio, radar, and cell phone transmissions are all classed as radio frequency emissions.

Taylor Swift Takes Kenny Chesney’s Place in New England
Tom Roland Mon, 07 Dec 2009 14:44:27 -0000
When Taylor Swift won Entertainer of the Year at last month’s Country Music Association Awards, she supplanted Kenny Chesney at the top of the organization’s food chain. Now, she’s taking his place in Boston, too, selling out Gillette Stadium Saturday in a mere 20 minutes, according to The Attleboro Sun Chronicle. Taylor becomes the first female solo artist to top the bill at the home of the New England Patriots’ football team, though she’s hardly the only country artist to do that. Toby Keith sold out the stadium in Foxborough, Mass., at least once, and Kenny’s done it every summer since 2005.
Brooks & Dunn’s Long Goodbye Takes a Full Year
Tom Roland Mon, 07 Dec 2009 14:42:33 -0000
When Brooks & Dunn announced Aug. 10 that they were calling it quits, they promised to make one final tour to tell their fans goodbye. Set to begin April 23 in Sacramento, the Last Rodeo Tour will come to a halt almost exactly one year after they told fans they were leaving. The final date on the 47-city itinerary takes place Aug. 8 in Chicago. The duo goes out on a high note. They’ve won 19 Country Music Association awards during their career, second only to George Strait, and “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” is in the running for a Grammy. They recently earned a hit with “Honky Tonk Stomp,” featuring ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons.

Dolly Parton, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney “Blessed” by Grammy Nods
Tom Roland Fri, 04 Dec 2009 14:44:06 -0000
The list is out, the tickets to Los Angeles are being bought, and the country stars in the running for 2010 Grammy Awards are all coming to grips with the reality that their work is being recognized by their peers among the year’s best. Kenny Chesney’s duet with Mac McAnally, Dolly Parton’s Broadway cast album and Lady Antebellum’s pair of nominations have all spurred gratitude and joy. Tracy Lawrence scored his first-ever Grammy nomination, Jim Lauderdale is a bluegrass finalist — and also had a hand in a couple of other nominated projects: He wrote two songs on George Strait’s Twang album, and he was a member of Elvis Costello’s supporting band on Secret, Profane & Sugarcane. Keith Urban collected four nods, and Taylor Swift appeared eight times on the list.
Jason Aldean Takes Platinum Act to GAC’s Top 20
Tom Roland Fri, 04 Dec 2009 14:15:09 -0000
Jason Aldean recently saw his hit “She’s Country” go platinum, and he’ll talk about his unique blend of country and hard-rockin’ music with co-host Nan Kelley on this weekend’s edition of GAC’s Top 20 Country Countdown. “She’s Country” was the first hit off his current Wide Open album, which has notched two more huge singles: “Big Green Tractor” and “The Truth.” He’s taking a break from touring through the end of December, but he’ll be back out on the trail in 2010. His calendar already includes a major stop on the inaugural HullabaLOU Music Festival at Churchill Downs, the same Louisville venue that hosts the Kentucky Derby. Also on the bill with Jason in July are the Zac Brown Band, Loretta Lynn, Kenny Chesney, Bon Jovi, Dwight Yoakam, the Dave Matthews Band, the Black Crowes and Gloriana.
Associates of Elvis Presley, Ralph Stanley, Hank Williams Depart
Tom Roland Fri, 04 Dec 2009 13:58:09 -0000
Songwriter Aaron Schroeder, bass player Jack Cooke and recording artist Big Bill Lister — musical figures who played a role in the careers of Elvis Presley, Ralph Stanley and Hank Williams — each died in the last week, leaving cultural contributions they accomplished while working in the shadows of some very significant artists. Their biggest moments spanned from the early 1950s to the current decade, with pop hits, Grammy-winning recordings and a much-loved novelty hit on their resumes.
