The Pastels are a group from Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Their story is under-documented, but they first released music around 1983 with a series of awkward but brilliant "almost-pop" singles for labels like Creation, Rough Trade and Whaam!. Eventually they developed a slightly more sophisticated sound and by the time of their debut album, Up for a Bit With The Pastels, had become quite influential on a wave of groups emerging from the fanzine culture of the time, which is now sometimes referred to as the C86 era. Their own sound at the time was influenced by garage punk, folk-pop and, in places, 1960s orch-pop. After a second album, Sittin' Pretty, they seemed to be fading out, and there were stories in the UK music press that they'd split. In fact they came back much stronger with two albums, Mobile Safari and Illumination which were adventurous and melodic, and much slower. Several reviews of Illumination described it as film-like, so it wasn't a major surprise when their next music was a soundtrack for Scottish film-maker, David Mackenzie's The Last Great Wilderness. Recently they also established their own Geographic imprint in collaboration with their current label Domino Records. The Pastels have never achieved mainstream popularity, but they are more significant than most "cult" groups, and have been cited as an influence by artists such as Sonic Youth, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine.
