Her father, Dr Lant Carpenter, was Unitarian minister at Exeter. In 1817 the family removed to Bristol, where Dr Carpenter was called to the ministry of Lewins Mead Meeting. As a child Mary Carpenter was unusually earnest, with a deep religious vein and a remarkable thoroughness in everything she undertook. She was educated in her fathers school for boys, learning Latin, Greek and mathematics, and other subjects at that time not generally taught to girls. She early showed an aptitude for teaching, taking a class in the Sunday school, and afterwards helping her father with his pupils. When Dr Carpenter gave up his school in 1829, his daughters opened a school for girls under Mrs Carpenters superintendence. In 1833 the raja Rammohun Roy visited Bristol, and inspired Miss Carpenter with a warm interest in India; and Dr Joseph Tuckerman of Boston about the same time aroused her sympathies for the condition of distitute children.
Her life-work began with her taking part in organizing, in 1835, a Working and Visiting Society, of which she was secretary for twenty years. In 1843, her interest in black people emancipation was aroused by a visit from Dr S. G. Howe. Her interest in general educational work was also growing. A bill introduced in this year to make provision for the better education of children in manufacturing districts, as a first instalment of a schenie of national education, failed to pass, largely owing to Nonconformist opposition, and private effort became doubly necessary. So-called Ragged Schools sprang up in many places, and Miss Carpenter conceived the plan of starting one in Lewins Mead. To this was added a nightschool for adults. In spite of many difficulties this was rendered a success, chiefly owing to Miss Carpenters unwearied enthusiasm and remarkable organizing power. In 1848 the closing of their own private school gave Miss Carpenter more leisure for philanthropic and literary work. She published a memoir of Dr Tuckerman, and a series of articles on ragged schools, which appeared in the Inquirer and were afterwards collected in book form.

AND PARTNERS WITH BESTBUY TO ADD A FREE LIVE WEBCAST OF THEIR CONCERT TO FAN CLUB MEMBERS
MUDVAYNE--one of the most creative and distinctive bands in the aggressive music world with sales exceeding 5 million units worldwide--have slammed onto the charts with "Do What You Do," the fastest-rising single of their career. Garnering over 75 radio adds out of the box--in the first 36 hours the track became available this week--the song is #1 most added at the Active Rock chart and #2 most added at Modern Rock.
As the band prepare to release THE NEW GAME--their first studio album in three years, due out November 18 via Epic Records--the band is working even harder to get the best possible deal directly to their fans in light of the tough economy by opening up ticket sales of their upcoming tour to all outlets and partnering with Best Buy to add a free live web cast of their concert to fan club members who pre-order the album at bestbuy.com/mudvayne. "We want fans that cannot afford to see us live or that live outside our tour markets to still get the benefits of our ‘The Album Is The TicketTM' program," says singer Chad Gray, "and by adding the live webcast and releasing ticket sales to the general public, we are now able to offer fans even more value and options for their money in this rough financial time."
The concert webcast will be from one of the tour stops (TBA) on the first leg of "The New Game Tour 2008." Meanwhile, all tickets will be released at all outlets by Monday, September 29th. All current ‘The Album Is The Ticket' members are entitled to a free meet & greet at their selected show.
