Buckingham Nicks was a 10-track LP by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The album, produced and engineered by Keith Olsen, was recorded in 1973 with Polydor Records, and released in September 1973 to quick commercial failure. The album has since gained significantly in popularity. Very few copies have endured the test of time and their rarity makes them extremely valuable to fans and collectors.
Despite the enduring popularity of both of its key contributors, the album was never officially released on CD, although various dubbed bootlegs have circulated since the late 1980s. The rights to the album have shifted between Nicks and Buckingham over the years. In 2003, Rhino Records announced the album's pending release as a deluxe CD with bonus tracks; however, the CD was never released. Buckingham and Nicks share split ownership of the album and claim that most of the original tracks no longer exist. Only two of the songs have managed to make the jump to CD so far: "Long Distance Winner" was released as part of Nicks' "Enchanted" box set and "Stephanie" turned up on a 1992 promo CD Buckingham put out titled "Words and Music (A Retrospective)." Another song from the album called "Crystal" was recorded by the duo during their first year in Fleetwood Mac and can be heard on the groups 'white album', "Fleetwood Mac."
Stevie and Lindsey first met while attending Menlo Atherton High School. A few years later the two crossed paths again. Lindsey remembered Stevie's incredibly unique voice and along with Javier Pacheco and Calvin Roper they formed a band called Fritz which became popular as a live act from 1968 until 1972. They opened for such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. After the band parted, Stevie and Lindsay continued writing and recording as a duo. After "Buckingham Nicks'" release, the two eventually would join legendary rock powerhouse, Fleetwood Mac, truly paving the way for their dreams. Prior to their joining of Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham Nicks toured the south on their "Southern Safari Tour" with Drummers Bob Aguirre, Gary "Hoppy" Hodges, and Bassist Tom Moncrieff.
