Retired Mexican-American chef Martin Naranjo share an L.A. home with his three beautiful, though single, adult daughters. Losing his ability to taste, Martin still lives to cook lavish meals for his family and close friends in family-style ritual at traditional sit-down meals. Although the women humor their father's old-fashioned ways, each of them is searching for fulfillment outside the family circle. There is Letitia, the oldest and most consevertive of the bunch, a rigid schoolteacher who is a member of the Christian faith. His youngest, Maribel is the most assured, although plagued with doubts. His middle daughter Carmen is most like him and shares his taste for cooking, but has chosen a career as a corporate consultant, which makes for a more secure lifestyle. When Carmen is offeren a high-profile job in Barcelona, which causes a rift in the family setting. Maribel soon finds herself drawn to a handsome Brazilian student, and Letitia is gaining affection for Orlando, an awkward ballplayer whom her students have sent mistaken love letters to without her knowing. Also at their dinners are a shy single mother, and her obnoxious mother who has her sights set on Martin's affections. Set with the backdrop of hispanic culture and featuring an ensemble cast Tortilla Soup has an average rating or "Fresh" percentage of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. While Ebert & Roeper gave it two thumbs up.
