Room at the Top is a 1959 film, based on the novel of the same name by John Braine, which tells the story of a young man who has just moved from a dreary English factory town to a more middle class settlement. He's attracted to the daughter of a town councillor, a wealthy and influential man, but also finds himself in a relationship with an older married woman. The film and novel differ on which girl he loves more, but in both his eventual choice is influenced by his desire to move up the career ladder without compromising his pride. The film stars Simone Signoret, Laurence Harvey, Heather Sears, Donald Wolfit, Donald Houston and Hermione Baddeley.
The movie was adapted by Neil Paterson and Mordecai Richler (uncredited) from the novel by John Braine. It was directed by Jack Clayton.
It won Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Simone Signoret) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, (Laurence Harvey), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Hermione Baddeley), Best Director and Best Picture.
