The Pit describes a brotherhood tradition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Established in 1971 members of the NROTC Battalion at the University of Illinois that are on the Drill Team, are Marine Options, and are the overall best of the best live at a house known as The Pit. The actual house that these 7-10 members of the battalion live in has changed throughout the years with a different house every 3 or 4 years. The house may change, but the traditions live on. This Marines “Fraternity” embodies the strongest members of the WGNB (Worlds Greatest Naval Battalion). Many former “Pitsters” have gone on to be powerful men in the military including Majors, Colonels, and even Generals. Former Pitsters have served in many wars including the more recent Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Pit will continue as a tradition at the University of Illinois as long as dedicated Marines pass through its doors.
