Mechanical Violator Hakaider (人造人間ハカイダー - Jinzô Ningen Hakaidâ), produced by Bandai/Toei and directed by Keita Amemiya, was released on April 15, 1995. The title character was, of course, from the original Kikaider series. Presented as a Terminator/Venom/Spawn-type anti-hero, Hakaider (whose human mode is named "Ryo", as opposed to Saburo) rides into Jesus Town and mutilates an army of evil androids, eventually fighting a silver counterpart android called Mikhail. In the climax, he fights against a giant android monster with Mikhail's head. Although, when it is attatched to the monster, Mikhail's head resembles the head Kikaider. The film states that Hakaider was created by the Parliament of Jesus Town, and was later stolen by scientists. This is proof that this film does not take place in the original Kikaider story's universe. Because originally, Hakaider was created by Dr. Komyoji, to destroy Kikaider if necessary.
While some in the United States (including anime fans) have given it some praise, fans of Kikaider in Japan (and even Hawaii) have universally rejected this film, which bombed at the Japanese box-office. Since then, Amemiya has never worked with Toei again.
A bit of trivia: In one of the first opening scenes when Ryo is stopped at a checkpoint, concept designs for other Amemiya films can be seen hanging up as wanted posters, namely the Fog Mother in 1994's Kamen Rider J.
