The Guard were a York band formed circa 1982 featuring members Steve Finney (Vocals), Arran King (Guitar), Jim Denson (Bass) and Dave Railton (Drums). Originally known as Chocolate Fireguard (albeit for a short time only), the band were asked to enter York's Battle Of The Bands after two of the original acts dropped out of the competition. The prize was to be two days studio time for the successful band-and The Guard, to their own surprise, won! They spent their studio-time prize wisely, recording their only single "Raise The Alarm" and the b-side "There's No Turning Back" under the watchful eye of local producer Will Jackson. Managed by Mark Brayshaw, The Guard toured various venues in the UK, following a surprise at their first ever gig in Bubwith at a small venue, when 200 people turned up to see them! The Guard also supported UK band The Escape Club at the University of York.
At one point in the early days a media source was quoted as saying ""The Guard" are Power-Pop for the 80's". But the band eventually called it a day despite record company interest, one reason cited as "conflicts" within the structure of the group. Keyboards had at this point been introduced. The Guard played their last gig in the original form at Harry's Bar in Micklegate, York. They did carry on with some new members under a different name "Sometimes Insane", but eventually split for good.
