Despite his French sounding name, costume designer Charles le Maire (1897 - 1985) was actually born in Chicago.
In a career spanning 37 years and nearly 300 films, he earned a total of four Academy Awards and an additional 12 nominations (the Oscar wins were for "All About Eve" in 1950, "David and Bathsheba" in 1951, "The Robe" in 1953 and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" in 1955). Notable successes include "The Razor's Edge" (1946), "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947), "A Letter to Three Wives" (1949), "The Gunfighter" (1950), "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), "Three Coins in the Fountain" (1954) and "Carousel" (1956). His last film was "Walk on the Wild Side" in 1962.
Charles le Maire died of heart failure in 1985.
