For other uses of the word "Archive", see Archive (disambiguation)

Archives refers to a collection of records, and also refers to the location in which these records are kept. Archives are made up of records which have been created during the course of an individual or organisation's life. In general an archive consists of records which have been selected for permanent or long-term preservation. Records, which may be in any media, are normally unpublished, unlike books and other publications. Archives may also be generated by large organizations such as corporations and governments. The highest level of organization of records in an archive is known as the fonds. Archives are distinct from libraries insofar as archives hold records which are unique. Archives can be described as holding information "by-products" of activities, while libraries hold specifically authored information "products". The word 'archives' is the correct terminology, whereas 'archive' as a noun or a verb is related to computer science. *

Etymology

The word archives (pronounced Ar-kives) is derived from the Greek arkhé meaning government or order (compare an-archy, mon-archy). The word originally developed from the Greek "arkheion" which refers to the home or dwelling of the Archon, in which important official state documents were filed and interpreted under the authority of the Archon.

The cold came late that fall, and the songbirds were caught off guard. By the time the snow and wind began in earnest, too many had been suckered into staying, and instead of flying south, instead of already having flown south, they were huddled in people’s yards, their feathers puffed . . .
Jorge Luis Borges: "A Dream"
Jorge Luis Borges Mon, 29 Jun 2009 04:00:00 -0000
In a deserted place in Iran there is a not very tall stone tower that has neither door nor window. In the only room (with a dirt floor and shaped like a circle) there is a wooden table and a bench. In that circular cell, a man who looks like . . .
Carol Muske-Dukes: "Twin Cities"
Carol Muske-Dukes Mon, 29 Jun 2009 04:00:00 -0000
It was the river that made them two-- The mills on one side, The cathedral on the other. We watched its swift currents: If we stared long enough, maybe It would stop cold and let us Skate across to the other side. It never froze in place--though I once . . .
Stephen O’Connor: "Ziggurat"
Stephen O'Connor Mon, 22 Jun 2009 04:00:00 -0000
The new girl sat at the computer in the corner playing Ziggurat, Panic!, and U-Turn. This was in the pine-panelled section of the Labyrinth, which is where the Minotaur had been hanging out lately, mainly because he didn’t remember ever having been there before, and he liked sleeping . . .
Julie Bruck: "The “World-Famous” Lipizzaners"
Julie Bruck Mon, 22 Jun 2009 04:00:00 -0000
They trail the trademark Royal Lipizzans, a day or three later, eschewing big arenas named after software for more questionable, outdoor venues, county fairs like this, where you wander among pygmy goats at dusk to locate the gate, always pay cash. There are fewer white stallions here, and they don’t . . .
Christian Wiman: "Five Houses Down"
Christian Wiman Mon, 22 Jun 2009 04:00:00 -0000
I loved his ten demented chickens and the hell-eyed dog, the mailbox shaped like a huge green gun. I loved the eyesore opulence of his five partial cars, the wonder-cluttered porch with its oilspill plumage, tools cauled in oil, the dark clockwork of disassembled engines christened Sweet Baby . . .
