Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898–22 November 1963), commonly referred to as C. S. Lewis, and by his friends as Jack, was an Irish author and scholar of mixed Irish, English, and Welsh ancestry. Born into a Church of Ireland family in Belfast, he was resident in England throughout his adult life. Lewis is known for his work on medieval literature, Christian apologetics and fiction, especially the children’s series entitled The Chronicles of Narnia and his science fiction Space Trilogy. He was also a leading figure in an Oxford literary group called the Inklings.
He had a brother named Warren Hamilton Lewis (Warnie), three years his elder. Lewis was initially schooled by occasional private tutors before being sent to a Wynyard School in Watford, Hertfordshire, in 1908, the same year that his mother died of cancer. Lewis's brother had already enrolled there three years previously. The school was soon closed due to a lack of pupils. Presumably, this was partly due to the headmaster Robert "Oldie" Capron who was so abusive towards his pupils that his neighbours thought him to be insane. Tellingly, in Surprised By Joy, Lewis would later nickname the school "Belsen". There is some speculation by biographer Alan Jacobs that the intense discipline at Wynyard greatly traumatised Lewis and was responsible for the development of "mildly sadomasochistic fantasies". Letters Lewis wrote to his life-long friend Arthur Greeves detailed women he would like to spank and were sometimes signed "Philomastix" ("whip-lover").1 2
