It's more and more common for debut novels to have elaborate homes on the Web, complete with blogs, chatrooms, videos and games. Often the sites are richly illustrated, almost cinematic.

In "A Place Called Canterbury," author Dudley Clendinen writes about the 400 days he spent at his mother's senior citizen apartment building/nursing home in Tampa, Fla., where the average age of its residents is 86. Clendinen became intimately involved with the lives of its residents and staff and weaved what has been described as a delightful soap opera.

"Truancy" is a dystopian novel written by Isamu Fukui, in which teachers and a city's totalitarian mayor indoctrinate students to mindlessly obey, as school-sanctioned bullies keep them in line with intimidation and violence. It's the author's first book — Fukui is himself still in high school, and wrote the novel when he was 15.
Sichuan Novelist Releases Oral Histories Before Quake Sat, 17 May 2008 16:00:00 -0400
Liao Yiwu, who spent four years in prison for his work protesting the killings at Tiananmen Square, wrote a compilation of oral histories about life in Sichuan. The book was released a month before the deadly earthquake rocked the region. Liao gives host Andrea Seabrook his count of the earthquake and discusses the book The Corpse Walker: Real-Life Stories, China from the Bottom Up.
